1976, when President Gerald Ford challenged his opponent, former Georgia governor Jimmy Carter, to a debate. Ford, behind in the polls because of inflation and his pardoning of Richard Nixon, declared at the Republican National Convention that he had been a good president and said he and Carter ought to debate. They did, three times. Ford narrowly lost the election that November.
